Path and Pace

Specify the milestones, speed, and acceptable means so the journey itself doesn't become the casualty.

Cleared to return to pickleball after knee surgery, you're tempted to jump straight into full games this Saturday, because the destination, "playing again," says nothing about how to get there. Plenty of rehab patients reach the goal and wreck it in the reaching, because the route was never part of the plan.

Path and Pace specifies the journey itself: milestones, allowable speed, sequence, overshoot limits, and acceptable means along the way. The cue: a well-defined endpoint with a completely unspecified route, especially where a rushed or disordered path causes real damage. Run it in three steps. First, ask the move question: what path reaches the outcome without making the journey itself unacceptable? Second, sequence graduated milestones with gates: walking, then drills, then half games, then full play. Third, define the advancement rule, you progress to the next stage only without next-day flare, which converts eagerness into a testable criterion. What changes when it works: pace stops being a mood and becomes a protocol, and setbacks trigger a step back one stage rather than a collapse of the whole goal. The underlying principle the spec states plainly: a desirable endpoint does not justify an unsafe or corrosive path.
