Select Reference Shape

Choose whether success is a point, threshold, band, trajectory, distribution, frontier, policy, or compass.

On the pickleball court you've been chasing one thing: harder opponents, always harder. Lately the games leave you anxious instead of alive. The mistake isn't ambition, it's geometry. Enjoyment in a sport doesn't live at a maximum; it lives in a band where challenge slightly exceeds skill, and "more difficulty forever" overshoots it.

Select Reference Shape has you choose the form success takes: a point (exact value), threshold (at least X), band (between X and Y), trajectory (improving over time), distribution (how outcomes spread), frontier (best available tradeoffs), policy (a rule you follow), or compass (a direction). The cue: your goal defaulted to a point or a maximum without anyone asking whether the result actually behaves that way. Run it in three steps. First, ask the move question: what form of destination fits this system without false precision? Second, test the candidates, for the sport, a challenge-skill flow band beats maximization. Third, restate the goal in that shape: "play opponents within one skill level of me, adjusting as I improve." What changes: the goal stops fighting the system's real behavior. One requirement from the spec: even a compass must imply a next experiment or directional test, or it's just a mood.
