You're 10 weeks into a cut, the scale is finally moving, and you're thrilled. But you're sleeping five hours, your knee aches on stairs, and yesterday you snapped at your kid over nothing. The headline number is winning while the things that made you want it in the first place quietly erode. The upside has gotten exciting enough that minimum safety and sanity are disappearing underneath it.

Floor Before Flight is a 60-second sentence completion. The cue: an exciting goal is eating its own foundations. The move: write "Even if we achieve the headline goal, it is failure unless " and fill in the blank. Then keep only the one or two conditions whose breach would invalidate all the upside. For the cut, that might be: it's failure unless sleep and joint safety stay above minimums. Those become non-negotiable floors, checked as seriously as the scale. What changes is visible immediately: you now have a tripwire that stops a hollow victory before it happens. The one warning built into the move: don't turn everything into a floor. If every nice-to-have becomes disqualifying, nothing can move, so reserve floors for conditions that genuinely cancel the win.
