The honest comparison isn't trip versus no trip; it's this trip versus the best other use of the same money and days.

The Counterfactual Twin is a 30-to-90-second probe for results that sound impressive with no stated alternative. The move: create a twin reality, same people, same time, same resources, but running the current best alternative instead. Then compare the two at the same horizon on three axes: outcome, cost, and learning. For the vacation, the spec's own comparison is the international trip versus a low-logistics local retreat, judged at the same recovery horizon: which family is actually more restored a month later, at what price, having learned what about how you rest? Sometimes the trip wins; the point is that it now has to. What changes: "sounds great" gets replaced by "beats the best alternative," a far higher bar. The honesty clause: counterfactuals are estimates, not observations, so express them as ranges and update them rather than dressing guesses up as precision.
