The Goal Rehire Interview

Fire the goal for 60 seconds and ask, with today's evidence, whether you would hire it back and at what scope.

Marathon number four is on the calendar, and your body is filing complaints: the same hip injury, twice this year. You keep training because you're "a marathoner," because of the years invested, because quitting feels like betrayal of a past self. Notice what's missing from that list: any evidence that the goal still serves you. Momentum, identity, and sunk cost have become its only remaining justification.

The Goal Rehire Interview runs the zero-based check. The cue: a long-pursued destination might be coasting on inertia. The move: fire the goal for 60 seconds, completely. Then, with today's evidence and today's obligations, interview it fresh: would you hire this goal now? At what scope, maybe a half marathon, or durable pain-free fitness instead? For what probation period? If the honest answer is no, route that answer toward exploring options or stopping, rather than quietly re-shelving it. What changes: you discover whether you're pursuing the goal or just carrying it. The safeguard: zero-based thinking is not an escape hatch from promises, withdrawal costs, or duties to others; commitments you made to real people remain part of the current decision.
