Undiagnostic or untrustworthy signal

Your observation can't separate the rival explanations, or the process that produced it is too weak to trust.

Your close friend replies "fine" to your check-in text, and the spiral begins: is she upset with you, slammed at work, or sliding into something darker? You reread the one word for tone. There is no tone. You're mining a signal for content it doesn't contain.

This diagnosis names the failure: an observation that cannot separate the rival explanations, or that comes from a process too weak to trust, is not evidence for any of them. The cue is noticing that every story you're considering predicts the exact same data. Steps: list the rivals explicitly (upset, busy, struggling); ask what each would predict differently about the signal in hand; notice that a busy friend and a hurt friend both send "fine," so the text discriminates nothing; then go get a signal that does discriminate, like a phone call, where warmth, flatness, and specifics diverge across the rivals. What changes is that you stop building narratives on a foundation that can't hold them, and your worry either dissolves or sharpens into something worth acting on. The reverse error matters too: when a signal genuinely discriminates, like three declined invitations in a row, don't wave it off as ambiguous to dodge the conclusion.
