Reorient

Change the direction of your reasoning, working backward from the endpoint or imagining absence, to collapse a forest of options into a few necessities.

Retirement planning has you paralyzed. Reasoning forward from today, every choice branches: this savings rate, that account type, this career move, and the tree of futures explodes beyond anything you can evaluate. Forward is the default direction of thought, but nobody said you have to reason in that direction.

REORIENT means changing the direction of your reasoning to collapse a forest of options into a few necessities. The cue: working forward from the current state branches too widely, or you've inherited a direction without choosing it. The moves: work backward from the endpoint (a specific year, a specific annual income, then ask what must be true five years before that, and five years before that); invert the question (what would guarantee failure? avoid those); ask what must already be true for the goal to be reachable; imagine absence (what if this account, or this job, disappeared?). Prefer the orientation that most sharply prunes the search or exposes a missing prerequisite. It works when whole branches vanish and one requirement, like a savings rate you're currently not hitting, stands exposed as non-negotiable. The safeguard: backward reasoning identifies requirements, not guaranteed causes, and hindsight-flavored certainty about the path is the failure mode.
