Your eating rules sort everything into two bins: healthy and unhealthy. The bins feel principled until they meet reality. Granola is "healthy" at 400 calories a bowl; a frozen pizza is "unhealthy" and so, once you've had a slice, the day is "ruined" and the rest of the pizza follows. Brittle binaries don't just misclassify; they create cliff-edge behavior at the boundary.
Category to Continuum is a 30-second repair for exactly this cue: binary labels producing brittle reasoning. The procedure: replace the category with one or two measurable axes, then deliberately locate the boundary cases. For food, try protein-per-calorie on one axis and how much a serving satisfies you on the other. Now granola, dried fruit, and "health" bars, the old boundary cases that were quietly wrecking the plan, land in honest middle positions instead of a virtuous bin. And the "ruined day" cliff disappears, because on a continuum there is no cliff; a slice of pizza just moves the day's position slightly, which changes the psychology entirely. It works when your boundary cases stop flip-flopping and your all-or-nothing spirals fade. The spec's warning: some categories are genuinely discrete. Allergen versus non-allergen is a real binary; don't dissolve distinctions that nature actually drew.
