When a theory sounds right but its consequences stay vague, build the smallest spreadsheet, simulation, or prototype with one variable you can change.

A theory about your side business sounds right in your head: "if I raise prices 20 percent and lose a few clients, I'll come out ahead with less work." You've believed it for six months and acted on none of it, because the consequences stay vague. How many clients is "a few"? Ahead by how much? The theory has never been made to produce a number.

Manipulable Toy is a 30-second build for exactly this cue: a theory that sounds right while its consequences remain vague. The procedure: build the smallest spreadsheet, simulation, or prototype containing one variable you can change. Here, a six-row spreadsheet: current clients, current price, hours per client, then new price and a cell for "clients lost," the manipulable variable, computing revenue and hours under each scenario. Now drag the variable: lose two clients, you're ahead in money and time; lose five, you break even on revenue but still save nine hours a week, which reframes what "break even" means. The vague theory becomes a landscape you can walk around in, and the real decision threshold, how many losses you can absorb, becomes a number. It works when "sounds right" turns into "holds between these values." The spec's warning: a toy reveals implications; it does not validate realism. The model shows what your assumptions entail, not whether they're true.
