Personification

Gives one part of a structure a face, a name, and a want, so an abstraction becomes something you can picture and argue with.

You are 15 minutes into explaining why your money keeps leaking, and your friend has gone polite. You have said "recurring charges across 19 services with automatic renewal". Then you say "it is a pet that eats 340 a month and I keep feeding it", and your friend sits up. Nothing about the situation changed. The second version has a character in it.

Personification is the treatment that gives one part of a structure a face, a name, or a want. The card wants you to carry a balance. The inbox is hungry. The habit is a roommate who never leaves. You are not adding information. You are handing the reader something that behaves, and people track things that behave more easily than they track a box with a label on it. It sits on top of any family. A loop, a flow, a rule, a set of forces in tension. The shape underneath stays what it was. Only the dressing changes.

The dressing does work, and some of that work is hiding. A want is a claim about why something happens. When you say the card wants a balance, the interest rate, the autopay setting, and the person who chose that setting all step back behind a face. That is the cost, and it is why this treatment needs a caption more than any other treatment does. One line under the drawing, naming who actually acts and what actually sets the number.

Reach for it when an idea is true and keeps sliding off, including off you. Leave it alone when the live question is who is responsible or what causes what, because a face answers both of those with a personality instead of an answer.
