Stag Hunt (Cooperation vs Safety)

A coordination game where mutual cooperation is preferable but unilateral cooperation is risky relative to a safer individual action.

A stag hunt represents a coordination problem in which mutual cooperation offers a better shared outcome, but cooperating alone is costly. The safer action is attractive when a player doubts the other’s cooperation. Unlike a prisoner’s dilemma, defection does not dominate: cooperating is the better response when the other cooperates.

A simple game gives 4 for successful joint action, 0 for attempting it alone, and 2 for the safe choice regardless of the partner. A risk-neutral player then prefers joint action when the probability of the partner joining exceeds one half. Assurance matters, and incentives matter too: reducing the loss from failed cooperation or changing the safe alternative changes that threshold.

When to use it

Useful when participants benefit from acting together but hesitate because others may choose the safer option.
