Counterinsurgency

The strategy of defeating an insurgency not by direct military force (which often strengthens the insurgency) but by winning the support of the population the insurgency operates within. Counterinsurgency recognizes that insurgencies thrive on legitimacy and grievances—you defeat them by addressing the grievances and offering a more compelling alternative. In business: when facing internal resistance to change, disruption from agile competitors, or grassroots customer revolt, the counterinsurgency approach is to understand and address underlying grievances rather than suppress the symptoms.

When to use it

When direct opposition to change is growing despite (or because of) forceful implementation; when internal resistance seems disproportionate to the change being made; when competitors are gaining traction by serving needs you're ignoring; when heavy-handed responses to opposition are making things worse.

How it can help

When facing opposition—internal resistance, competitor insurgency, customer revolt—stop trying to defeat it directly and start understanding what's driving it. What legitimate grievance fuels the opposition? What would addressing that grievance do to its support base? The counterinsurgency insight: force applied against an insurgency without addressing its root cause typically creates MORE insurgents (every heavy-handed action recruits new opponents). The winning strategy: address the underlying cause, win hearts and minds, and make the insurgent position irrelevant rather than defeated.
