Chesterton's Fence

G.K. Chesterton's principle: never remove a fence (rule, tradition, or institution) until you understand why it was put there. If you don't understand its purpose, you're likely missing something important. The principle guards against naive reformers who assume existing systems are irrational. Before changing anything, first understand the pressures, constraints, and tradeoffs that produced the current state.
