Anecdotal
Anecdotal reasoning becomes unreliable when an individual story is used to establish a general frequency, causal effect, or expected result without adequate support. Stories may be accurate, mistaken, invented, representative, or exceptional. They can reveal experiences and suggest hypotheses, but generalization requires attention to selection, comparison cases, and the population involved.
An anecdote can support a narrow claim that an event occurred while leaving its frequency and cause uncertain. Selection matters: the person telling the story may have noticed it because it was unusual, memorable, or useful to their argument. Even several stories can come from the same selected pool. Before generalizing, identify the population, the missing cases, and how the examples came to your attention.
Different questions require different evidence. One verified counterexample can defeat a claim that something never happens, but one success cannot show that an approach usually works. A detailed account can also expose a possible mechanism worth investigating. Keep that investigative value while limiting the conclusion: use the story to decide what to ask, observe, or compare next, rather than letting its vividness set the expected outcome.
When to use it
When evaluating claims supported primarily by stories rather than data; when your own experience contradicts statistical evidence; when designing research or analysis and need to avoid anecdotal reasoning; when communicating—use anecdotes for engagement but not as proof.
How it can help
Identify what the anecdote can support and what remains unknown. Ask how the case was selected, whether comparable cases are missing, and what denominator or comparison is needed for the conclusion. Retain useful qualitative detail while seeking systematic evidence when available and appropriate.
