Decision Groups / Backcasting
Backcasting starts with a desired future outcome and works backward to identify the steps needed to reach it—the inverse of forecasting (which projects forward from the present). By starting with the end state, backcasting reveals necessary conditions, potential obstacles, and intermediate milestones that forward-thinking often misses. Particularly effective for ambitious goals where the path forward is unclear but the destination is vivid.

When facing strategic decisions under uncertainty; when multiple stakeholders have competing interests; when the stakes are high and reversibility is low.
