Outside View vs Inside View

Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky's distinction between estimating based on the specific details of your situation (inside view) and estimating based on how similar situations typically turn out (outside view/reference class forecasting). The inside view is optimistic by default because you focus on what makes your case special. The outside view is more accurate because base rates are powerful predictors. Superforecasters start with the outside view, then adjust.

When facing strategic decisions under uncertainty; when multiple stakeholders have competing interests; when the stakes are high and reversibility is low.
