Prisoner's Dilemma (extended)
The foundational game theory model where two rational agents, each acting in self-interest, produce an outcome that's worse for BOTH than if they had cooperated. Each prisoner can cooperate (stay silent) or defect (betray). If both cooperate, both get light sentences. If both defect, both get heavy sentences. If one cooperates and the other defects, the defector goes free and the cooperator gets the worst sentence. Individual rationality dictates defection—but mutual defection is worse than mutual cooperation. The dilemma captures the fundamental tension between individual incentives and collective welfare that pervades business, politics, and social life.
When to use it
When competitive dynamics are producing mutual harm; when two parties would both benefit from cooperation but neither trusts the other to cooperate; when designing agreements, partnerships, or market structures that need to overcome self-interested defection; when evaluating whether a competitive interaction is one-shot (favors defection) or repeated (favors cooperation).
