Argument from Ignorance

An argument from ignorance treats a lack of support for one position as sufficient proof of another without establishing that the missing evidence should have been found. A claim is not true merely because it has not been disproved. However, a reliable search that would probably detect something can make its absence informative. Evaluate the expected evidence and the search before judging the inference.

The key question is whether a search would probably have found the thing if it existed. No missing keys found after checking one drawer tells you little about the whole house. No matching record in a complete, accurately searched register can tell you much more. Absence becomes informative through the scope and sensitivity of the search; an unexplored possibility does not become true merely because nobody has eliminated it.

This distinction also changes how to act under uncertainty. You can leave a claim unresolved while choosing a cautious step, gathering more information, or running a bounded trial. You do not need to pretend either that ignorance proves safety or that any imaginable danger is equally plausible. Specify the observation you expected, why it would be detectable, and what residual uncertainty matters for the present decision.

When to use it

When claims are supported primarily by lack of disproof; when risk assessments confuse 'no evidence of problems' with 'evidence of no problems'; when evaluating extraordinary claims that resist falsification; when the burden of proof needs to be properly assigned.

How it can help

When someone relies on a lack of disproof, ask what evidence supports the claim itself. When they rely on an absence of detected problems, ask whether the observation process could reliably detect those problems. State the remaining uncertainty and decide what additional check, bounded trial, or practical precaution is justified.
