Scenario Analysis

Systematically imagining and planning for multiple possible futures rather than assuming a single expected outcome. Good scenario analysis doesn't try to predict THE future—it prepares for several plausible futures. Typically involves identifying key uncertainties, constructing 3-5 distinct scenarios, stress-testing strategies against each, and building plans that perform reasonably across all scenarios.

When to use it

When the future is genuinely uncertain (always, but especially during disruption). When making long-term commitments. When key variables could go in very different directions.

How it can help

The antidote to single-point forecasting. Helps leaders build strategies that are robust across multiple futures rather than optimal for one assumed future. Essential for strategic planning, investment decisions, and risk management.
