Preferential Attachment (Cumulative Advantage)

The mechanism by which 'the rich get richer' in networks: new nodes preferentially connect to already well-connected nodes, creating power law distributions where a few hubs dominate. Also called the Matthew Effect in networks. Preferential attachment explains why bestseller lists are self-reinforcing (popular books get more visibility, which makes them more popular), why top universities attract the best students and faculty (prestige attracts prestige), and why social media followers distribute so unequally. The mechanism is simple but the consequences are profound: small early advantages compound into enormous late advantages.

When to use it

When analyzing why some entities dominate their networks disproportionately; when competing in winner-take-most markets; when deciding how much to invest in early growth versus optimization; when evaluating whether competitive dynamics are driven by genuine quality differences or by self-reinforcing network position.

How it can help

Understand whether your domain is governed by preferential attachment dynamics. If yes: early advantage matters enormously—invest heavily in being the early leader. Get your first adopters, citations, customers, or connections quickly, because each one makes the next easier (positive feedback). If you're competing against an established hub: you can't beat preferential attachment head-on. Instead, create a new network dimension where you're the first hub, or target a niche underserved by the existing hub.
