Scale-Free Networks (Power Law Degree Distribution)

Networks where a few nodes have enormously more connections than the average, following a power law distribution rather than a bell curve. The internet (a few sites get most traffic), social networks (a few people have millions of followers), and citation networks (a few papers get most citations) are all scale-free. The mechanism is preferential attachment: new nodes preferentially connect to already well-connected nodes ('the rich get richer'), creating extreme inequality in connectivity. Scale-free networks are robust to random failure (most nodes don't matter) but vulnerable to targeted attack on hubs.

When to use it

When a few nodes (customers, partners, employees) account for disproportionate value; when designing marketing, sales, or networking strategies; when assessing system vulnerability to targeted attack; when evaluating whether network effects in your market create winner-take-most dynamics.

How it can help

Identify whether the networks you operate in are scale-free, and strategize accordingly. In scale-free networks: becoming a hub is exponentially more valuable than being a typical node. Marketing: reaching one hub (influencer) can be worth reaching 10,000 typical nodes. Recruitment: one highly connected hire brings an entire network. Risk: your dependence on a few hub nodes (key clients, critical suppliers, star employees) creates concentration risk. Protect your hubs and don't over-rely on any single one.
