Keystone Species Effect
A keystone species has ecological effects disproportionate to its abundance in a specified community. The claim depends on the interactions and outcomes examined. Paine's predator-removal experiments helped demonstrate how predation can prevent a competitor from monopolizing space. Not every important species shapes every other niche, and changes need not propagate uniformly through an entire ecosystem.
A keystone claim compares an element's effects with its abundance or size. It therefore needs more than evidence that the element is useful. Trace the pathway through which it changes other participants' opportunities. Paine's predator-removal work, for example, examined how predation limited monopolization of space. The useful analytical question is which interaction explains the disproportionate effect.
In organizations, this is an analogy for investigating consequential dependencies. Do not remove a suspected keystone simply to prove its importance. Inspect interruptions, compare alternatives, or test a bounded substitute. A crucial coordinator may deserve support, but making everything depend on one person can also create fragility. Protecting the valuable function may require distributing it rather than preserving its present owner.

When identifying which elements of a system are truly critical versus merely important; when evaluating the potential cascading effects of removing a person, product, or process; when building new ecosystems and want to establish elements that will shape the whole system; when system health depends on protecting a few disproportionately important elements.
