Beer Distribution Game (Bullwhip Effect)
Jay Forrester and Peter Senge's simulation game demonstrating the bullwhip effect: in a supply chain, small fluctuations in consumer demand produce increasingly amplified oscillations as you move upstream—retailers order slightly more, wholesalers order much more, distributors order even more, and manufacturers swing wildly between overproduction and underproduction. The bullwhip effect is a systemic phenomenon: each rational actor in the chain, responding to local information with reasonable decisions, produces system-level instability that no actor intended or desires. The game demonstrates that system structure, not individual decision quality, produces the dysfunction.

When supply chains exhibit oscillating overstock/understock patterns; when small demand changes produce large upstream disruptions; when understanding why rational individual decisions produce irrational system outcomes; when designing information systems that reduce amplification across organizational chains.

The structural fixes: (1) Share end-consumer demand data throughout the chain (reducing information lag). (2) Reduce order batching (smaller, more frequent orders reduce amplification). (3) Stabilize pricing (eliminating forward-buying incentives). (4) Shorten the supply chain (fewer stages = less amplification). The meta-lesson: most supply chain dysfunction is structural, not behavioral—fixing individual decisions without fixing the structure changes nothing.
