Bottlenecks
The performance of any system is constrained by its narrowest point—the bottleneck. No matter how much you improve other parts of the system, overall throughput won't increase until you address the bottleneck. Once one bottleneck is resolved, a new one emerges elsewhere. This is the Theory of Constraints: identify the binding constraint, exploit it, subordinate everything else to it, then elevate it.
When to use it
When improving a system and results aren't changing despite effort. When allocating resources across a process. When personal productivity feels capped despite working harder.
How it can help
The most actionable systems model for operations and strategy. Prevents wasted effort on non-bottleneck improvements. Focuses scarce resources on the one thing that will actually increase throughput. Applies equally to personal productivity, team performance, and business operations.
