Complex Adaptive Systems
Systems composed of many interacting agents that adapt their behavior based on their interactions and environment. Markets, ecosystems, cities, immune systems, and organizations are all complex adaptive systems. They share key properties: they self-organize, they adapt, they exhibit emergence, and they cannot be understood by analyzing components in isolation. They are inherently unpredictable in detail but often show recognizable patterns.
When to use it
When managing any system with multiple independent actors. When top-down planning keeps failing. When surprises keep emerging despite careful analysis. When the system seems to have a 'mind of its own.'
