Criticality

The state at which a system is poised at the boundary between order and chaos—where small perturbations can cascade into large-scale changes. Borrowed from physics (critical mass in nuclear reactions, phase transitions), criticality in complex systems describes the conditions under which avalanche-like propagation occurs. Understanding criticality helps identify when a system is approaching a tipping point and when intervention will have disproportionate effects.

When dealing with complex, interconnected problems; when interventions keep failing; when small changes produce disproportionate effects; when predicting system behavior.
