Entropy

The second law of thermodynamics applied broadly: closed systems tend toward disorder, and maintaining order requires continuous energy input. In organizations, entropy manifests as process decay, cultural erosion, knowledge loss, and increasing disorder over time. The insight: doing nothing guarantees decline. Maintaining current quality requires ongoing effort, and improving requires even more. Every system is either being actively maintained/improved or it's deteriorating—there is no steady state.

When to use it

When dealing with complex, interconnected problems; when interventions keep failing; when small changes produce disproportionate effects; when predicting system behavior.

How it can help

Enables seeing the structural patterns beneath surface-level events. Helps leaders understand why interventions often fail and where to find genuine leverage for change.
