Feedback Loops
Circular causal mechanisms where a system's output loops back to influence its input—either REINFORCING (positive feedback: output amplifies input, producing exponential growth or decline) or BALANCING (negative feedback: output counteracts input, producing stability and homeostasis). Reinforcing loops: viral growth (more users → more content → more users), bank runs (more withdrawals → more panic → more withdrawals), compound interest. Balancing loops: thermostat (too hot → cooling activates → temperature drops), market equilibrium (high price → reduced demand → price drops). As a mental model: feedback loops are the ENGINES of system behavior—understanding which loops are operating and whether they're reinforcing or balancing reveals why systems grow, stabilize, oscillate, or collapse.
When to use it
When system behavior needs explanation through circular causation; when reinforcing loops need identification to leverage or interrupt; when balancing loops need strengthening for stability; when feedback delays are producing oscillation or overshoot.
How it can help
Map the feedback loops in any system to understand and predict its behavior. The diagnostic: (1) Identify the key variables. (2) Trace how each variable influences others. (3) Follow the chain back to the original variable. (4) Classify: does the loop AMPLIFY (reinforcing) or COUNTERACT (balancing) changes? For strategy: (1) Reinforce positive feedback loops that serve your goals (network effects, brand reputation). (2) Install balancing loops where runaway dynamics are dangerous (spending limits, quality controls). (3) Watch for DELAYS in feedback loops—they produce oscillation and overshoot.
