Feedback Loops (and Homeostasis)
Circular causal chains where a system's output feeds back as input, either amplifying change (positive/reinforcing feedback: success breeds success, panic breeds panic) or dampening it (negative/balancing feedback: thermostat, hunger-eating cycle). Homeostasis is the tendency of systems to maintain stable states through balancing feedback loops. Every system you interact with—markets, organizations, bodies, relationships—is governed by feedback loops. Understanding which loops dominate explains why systems behave as they do and reveals where intervention is most effective.
When to use it
When systems seem stuck despite effort (strong balancing loops maintaining status quo); when growth is explosive or decline is accelerating (reinforcing loops dominating); when analyzing why organizations resist change; when designing systems that need to be either stable or growth-oriented.
How it can help
Map the feedback loops in any system you're trying to influence. Ask: when this variable changes, what does it affect, and how does that effect feed back to the original variable? If the loop is reinforcing (more leads to more), expect exponential growth or collapse—and look for what will eventually create a balancing loop. If the loop is balancing (more leads to correction back to less), expect stability—and look for what might disrupt it. The highest-leverage interventions change the structure of feedback loops, not the variables within them.
