Growth and Underinvestment Archetype
Peter Senge's system archetype where initial growth generates demand for capacity expansion, but the organization fails to invest in capacity fast enough—causing service quality to degrade, which slows growth, which seems to justify the underinvestment. A restaurant gets popular → wait times increase → some customers leave → growth slows → owner concludes 'the market isn't as big as we thought' (instead of 'we underinvested in capacity'). The archetype's trap: the underinvestment CAUSES the growth slowdown, but the growth slowdown is INTERPRETED as evidence that investment isn't needed. The organization never sees the growth it killed through underinvestment.
When to use it
When growth has slowed and the interpretation is 'market saturation' rather than 'capacity constraint'; when service quality has degraded as volume increased; when underinvestment in infrastructure, hiring, or systems is limiting growth that's being attributed to market conditions; when the growth and underinvestment dynamic is producing a self-limiting cycle.
How it can help
When growth slows after an initial surge: ask 'is this a demand problem or a capacity problem?' The diagnostic: is the quality of service, product, or experience declining as volume increases? If yes: the growth limitation is capacity constraint, not market saturation—and the solution is investment, not acceptance. The intervention: invest AHEAD of demand (which feels risky during a slowdown) rather than in response to demand (which is always too late). For planning: build capacity projections based on UNCONSTRAINED demand, not on the demand you're actually seeing (which is already constrained by your capacity limitations).
