Hierarchy as System Structure

Herbert Simon's insight that complex systems are universally organized hierarchically—not because hierarchy is imposed but because it EVOLVES as the most stable and efficient architecture for complex systems. In biology: atoms → molecules → organelles → cells → tissues → organs → organisms. In organizations: individuals → teams → departments → divisions → companies. Hierarchy provides: decomposability (subsystems can be understood independently), resilience (failure at one level doesn't cascade through all levels), and efficiency (intermediate stable forms serve as building blocks). Simon's 'watchmaker' parable: a watchmaker who assembles in hierarchical sub-assemblies (stable intermediates) far outperforms one who assembles all parts at once.

When complex systems need architectural design for stability and resilience; when flat organizational structures are producing coordination failures; when system design needs to balance decomposition with integration; when understanding why hierarchical organization emerges universally in complex systems.
