Left-Hand Column Technique
Chris Argyris's exercise where you write what was actually said in a conversation in the right column and what you were thinking but didn't say in the left column. The gap between the two columns reveals your unstated assumptions, withheld concerns, and defensive routines. The technique surfaces the hidden thinking that drives unproductive patterns in conversations and relationships—making it available for examination and change.
When to use it
When dealing with complex, interconnected problems; when interventions keep failing; when small changes produce disproportionate effects; when predicting system behavior.
