Limits to Growth Archetype

Peter Senge's system archetype where initial success creates a reinforcing growth loop that eventually encounters a balancing constraint—and the constraint, not the growth engine, determines the system's ultimate trajectory. A startup grows rapidly (reinforcing loop: more customers → more revenue → more marketing → more customers) until hitting a constraint (balancing loop: more customers → more support needs → degrading quality → fewer customers). The archetype explains why growth plateaus: the growth engine is still running, but the constraint is now stronger. The common mistake: responding to plateau by pushing the growth engine harder when the constraint needs attention.

When to use it

When growth has plateaued despite continued investment in the growth engine; when success seems to be creating its own problems; when the pattern of initial rapid growth followed by stagnation is occurring; when identifying the binding constraint would redirect effort more productively than pushing harder on growth.

How it can help

When growth plateaus: identify the CONSTRAINT rather than pushing the growth engine harder. The diagnostic: what's the balancing force that's counteracting the reinforcing growth loop? In startups: often quality/operations that can't scale with sales. In personal development: often capacity limits (time, energy, complexity tolerance) that constrain growth in capability. The intervention: address the CONSTRAINT first, because pushing the growth engine while the constraint is binding just wastes energy. Goldratt's Theory of Constraints provides the operational framework: find the bottleneck, exploit it, subordinate everything else to it, elevate it, repeat.
