Mental Models (Explicit Surfacing)

Peter Senge's discipline of bringing unconscious mental models—the assumptions, generalizations, and beliefs that shape how we understand and act in the world—into conscious awareness where they can be examined and tested. Unsurfaced mental models are the most powerful because they operate invisibly. The practice involves inquiry skills (asking 'what assumption am I making?'), advocacy skills (stating your reasoning transparently), and the willingness to be wrong.

When dealing with complex, interconnected problems; when interventions keep failing; when small changes produce disproportionate effects; when predicting system behavior.
