Resilience

The capacity of a system to absorb disturbance, reorganize, and maintain its essential functions—distinct from robustness (resisting change) and distinct from efficiency (optimizing for known conditions). Resilient systems have redundancy, diversity, modularity, and feedback loops. The key tradeoff: resilience and efficiency are often in tension—optimizing for efficiency (removing slack, reducing redundancy) frequently reduces resilience. The most dangerous systems are those that are efficient but fragile.

When to use it

When dealing with complex, interconnected problems; when interventions keep failing; when small changes produce disproportionate effects; when predicting system behavior.

How it can help

Enables seeing the structural patterns beneath surface-level events. Helps leaders understand why interventions often fail and where to find genuine leverage for change.
