Shifting the Burden Archetype

Peter Senge's system archetype where addressing a problem with a symptomatic solution reduces pressure to implement the fundamental solution—and over time, the symptomatic solution becomes the default, the fundamental solution atrophies, and the system becomes dependent on the symptomatic fix. Organizational example: outsourcing a capability rather than building it internally (quick fix) → internal capability atrophies → increased dependence on outsourcing → fundamental solution (internal capability) becomes progressively harder. Personal example: caffeine for energy (symptomatic) rather than adequate sleep (fundamental) → sleep patterns worsen → more caffeine needed → fundamental solution becomes harder.

When to use it

When quick fixes are being applied repeatedly to the same problem; when organizational capability in some area seems to be declining; when dependence on external solutions is increasing; when the fundamental solution is becoming progressively harder to implement.

How it can help

For any recurring problem: identify whether the current solution is symptomatic (addressing the symptom) or fundamental (addressing the cause). If symptomatic: the pressure relief from the symptom fix is reducing motivation to implement the fundamental fix—and the fundamental fix is getting harder over time. The intervention: (1) Acknowledge the burden-shifting dynamic explicitly. (2) Implement the fundamental solution WHILE using the symptomatic solution for immediate relief. (3) Set a deadline for transitioning from symptomatic to fundamental. (4) Monitor for the atrophy that makes the fundamental solution progressively harder.
