Suboptimization
The systems failure where optimizing a SUBSYSTEM degrades the performance of the WHOLE SYSTEM—because what's optimal for the part isn't optimal for the whole. A manufacturing department that optimizes its own efficiency by producing long runs of single products creates inventory buildups and delivery delays for the whole company. A marketing team that optimizes for lead volume overwhelms sales with unqualified prospects. As a mental model: suboptimization reveals that LOCAL OPTIMIZATION can produce GLOBAL DEGRADATION—the most dangerous form of inefficiency because each subsystem's metrics look great while the system as a whole suffers.
When to use it
When subsystem excellence coexists with system-level underperformance; when local optimization is creating cross-system problems; when metrics are driving subsystem behavior that degrades the whole; when understanding why 'everyone's doing great' but 'we're failing' requires systems-level diagnosis.
How it can help
Align subsystem optimization with whole-system performance through: (1) Measure and reward SYSTEM-LEVEL outcomes, not just subsystem metrics. (2) When a subsystem is performing excellently but the system is struggling: check whether the subsystem's optimization is degrading other parts. (3) Design metrics that capture cross-system effects (e.g., manufacturing should be measured partly on delivery time, not just production efficiency). (4) Use Goldratt's Theory of Constraints: optimize the BOTTLENECK, not every component. Non-bottleneck optimization is waste at best and harmful at worst.
