Margin of Safety
Benjamin Graham's engineering-inspired principle: build in a BUFFER between what you expect and what you can withstand—so that when reality deviates from expectation (as it always does), the system survives. In structural engineering: bridges are built to handle 3-5x the expected maximum load. In investing: buy assets at prices significantly below estimated intrinsic value so that even if your estimate is wrong, you don't lose. In project management: allocate more time and budget than expected. As a mental model: margin of safety is the ANTIDOTE TO OVERCONFIDENCE—it acknowledges that your estimates, forecasts, and models are ALWAYS somewhat wrong, and builds in enough buffer that being wrong doesn't produce catastrophe.
When to use it
When estimates and forecasts need buffers to account for inevitable inaccuracy; when the consequences of failure are high enough to justify extra cushion; when overconfidence in projections needs systematic correction; when system design needs to survive conditions worse than expected.
How it can help
Build margins of safety into every critical system. The practices: (1) For time estimates: add 50-100% buffer (Hofstadter's Law: it always takes longer than you expect, even when you take that into account). (2) For financial projections: ensure survival at 50-70% of projected revenue. (3) For investment: require a significant discount to estimated value before committing. (4) For systems: design to handle 2-3x expected peak load. (5) CALIBRATE the margin to the CONSEQUENCES of failure: higher consequences require larger margins. For entrepreneurs: your most important margin of safety is cash reserves—runway is the buffer between your plan and reality.
