Reed's Law (Value of Group-Forming Networks)
David Reed's extension of Metcalfe's Law: while Metcalfe's Law says network value grows as n² (the number of possible connections between pairs), Reed's Law says the value of group-forming networks grows as 2ⁿ (the number of possible subgroups). The value of Facebook isn't in pairwise connections but in the groups, communities, and subcultures that form within it. Social networks are exponentially more valuable than communication networks because they enable group formation, which creates exponentially more possible combinations of value.

When evaluating network businesses and need to understand their value dynamics; when designing platforms and deciding between facilitating pairs versus groups; when building communities and want to maximize network effects; when analyzing why some networks become exponentially more valuable than others.

When building platforms or communities, optimize for group formation, not just pairwise connections. In organizational design: the value of bringing people together isn't in the n² possible one-on-one conversations but in the 2ⁿ possible team configurations that could form. This means that adding one more person to a network doesn't just add n new connections—it doubles the number of possible groups.
