Tool Lifecycle Management (Adopt, Adapt, Abandon)

The framework for managing tools through their natural lifecycle: adoption (evaluating and onboarding), adaptation (customizing and integrating into workflows), and abandonment (recognizing when a tool has been superseded and migrating away). Most tool failures occur not at adoption (wrong tool) but at the transitions: failure to adapt (using a powerful tool shallowly) and failure to abandon (holding onto tools long past their useful life). The lifecycle perspective shows that tool management is an ongoing process, not a one-time decision—every tool will eventually need to be abandoned, and planning for that transition is part of responsible adoption.

When to use it

When tool sprawl is creating overhead; when tools that were once productive are now limiting; when the team is spending more time maintaining tools than using them productively; when tool decisions need a lifecycle framework rather than ad hoc evaluation.

How it can help

For each tool in your stack: identify which lifecycle phase it's in. Adoption phase: evaluate against alternatives, define success criteria, establish a review timeline. Adaptation phase: invest in deep integration, customize workflows, train advanced features. Abandonment phase: identify the successor, plan the migration, execute the transition. The most common failure: staying in the adaptation phase indefinitely when the tool should be abandoned. The diagnostic: if you're working around the tool more than working WITH it, it's entered the abandonment phase. Schedule quarterly tool lifecycle reviews.
