The Emotion Default

The biological tendency to respond to feelings rather than reasons. When triggered, the emotion default hijacks our decision-making: we react based on how we feel in the moment rather than what would actually serve our goals. The emotion default is amplified by sleep deprivation, hunger, fatigue, and stress (captured by the HALT principle: Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired). Recognizing its influence is the first step to managing it.

When to use it

When you feel urgent pressure to decide. When emotions are running high. When you notice physical stress signals (HALT conditions). When a decision 'feels obvious' but you haven't thought it through.

How it can help

Explains why smart people make irrational decisions under pressure. Helps leaders recognize when they or their team are making decisions from emotional reaction rather than strategic calculation. The foundation for building self-control and decision hygiene.
