Genre

The category or type of communication that carries implicit rules about form, content, tone, and expectations—and that audiences use to interpret and evaluate what they receive. An email, a blog post, a legal brief, a pitch deck, and a bedtime story are all different genres with different conventions. Genre awareness enables: matching your communication to audience expectations, deliberately violating genre conventions for effect, and recognizing when genre mismatch is causing miscommunication. As a mental model: every communication exists within a genre, and the genre shapes how the audience processes and evaluates it. Genre mismatch (using the wrong genre for your audience and purpose) is one of the most common communication failures.

When to use it

When communication failure stems from genre mismatch; when audience expectations need identification before content creation; when genre conventions would improve communication effectiveness; when deliberate genre violation would create desired effect.

How it can help

Before creating any communication: identify the genre and conform to (or deliberately violate) its conventions. The practices: (1) IDENTIFY the genre your audience expects—a board presentation has different conventions than a team standup. (2) MATCH your communication to genre expectations—or signal clearly when you're departing from them. (3) DIAGNOSE miscommunication as genre mismatch: 'I wrote a detailed analysis, but they expected an executive summary'—that's a genre problem. (4) Study the conventions of genres you frequently use—structure, tone, length, formality. For entrepreneurs: investor pitches, customer emails, and team communications are DIFFERENT GENRES requiring different approaches.
