Steel Man Argument (Opposite of Straw Man)
Steel manning reconstructs a strong reasonable version of an argument so its best challenge can be examined. Preserve the actual speaker's commitments and label any improvements you add. Accurate representation and strengthened reconstruction are related but different tasks.
Strengthening an argument is useful when it exposes a serious challenge your current view has avoided. Start with the actual position, then identify its best reasons and relevant conditions. If you add a new premise or a different goal, mark that addition as your reconstruction rather than attributing it to the original speaker.
A strong alternative need not be equally convincing. Compare it with your own view using the same evidence and constraints, and allow the result to remain asymmetric. The exercise can reveal a useful objection, a condition under which the alternative works, or a reason to retain your position. It cannot guarantee better decisions simply by sounding generous.
When to use it
Before arguing against any position in important discussions; when debates feel unproductive because sides are talking past each other; when making decisions that require understanding the strongest case for options you're rejecting; when building intellectual credibility by demonstrating you can inhabit perspectives you disagree with.
How it can help
Understand the original position, identify its strongest relevant support, and compare it with alternatives. Seek confirmation where useful without making perfect agreement a prerequisite for every criticism.
