Safeguards
Pre-committed rules and procedures that protect decision quality when you're most vulnerable to poor judgment. Safeguards work because they shift the decision point: instead of deciding in the moment (when defaults dominate), you decide in advance under calm conditions. Examples: 'sleep on it' rules for purchases over $500, decision journals, HALT checks, automatic stop-losses, cooling-off periods.
When to use it
When designing decision processes. When you've identified recurring decision errors. When willpower-based strategies keep failing. When stakes are high and reversibility is low.
How it can help
Converts abstract awareness of biases into structural protection. Safeguards work even when willpower fails because they change the environment rather than relying on self-control. The most reliable method for improving decision quality over time.
