Believe First and Doubt Later
Daniel Gilbert's research showing that the brain's DEFAULT response to new claims is to BELIEVE them—and that disbelief requires a SECOND, effortful cognitive step. Comprehension and belief are not sequential (understand, then evaluate)—comprehension IS initial belief, and rejection requires additional processing. Under cognitive load, time pressure, or fatigue, the rejection step is impaired, leaving the initial belief intact. As a mental model: you are AUTOMATICALLY BELIEVING things all the time and only selectively rejecting some through effortful evaluation. This means: you believe more than you think you do, and conditions that impair effortful processing (stress, distraction, fatigue) increase credulity.
When to use it
When credulity needs to be understood as a cognitive default; when conditions that impair rejection (fatigue, stress, cognitive load) increase vulnerability to false beliefs; when the distinction between comprehending a claim and believing it needs clarification; when deliberate evaluation needs to be built into belief-formation processes.
How it can help
Protect your belief-formation process by recognizing its default credulity. The practices: (1) Don't make important judgments under cognitive load—your rejection mechanisms are impaired. (2) Treat initial plausibility as COMPREHENSION, not evidence—just because something makes sense doesn't mean it's true. (3) Build in deliberate evaluation AFTER initial exposure: sleep on important claims before acting on them. (4) Be especially skeptical of compelling narratives consumed when tired, distracted, or emotionally activated. For organizations: information presented in fast-paced meetings exploits believe-first processing—slow down evaluation of important claims.
