Memory Limitations
The cognitive science finding that human memory is severely limited in capacity, duration, and accuracy—and that these limitations systematically distort decision-making, learning, and self-understanding. Key limitations: WORKING MEMORY holds only 4±1 items simultaneously (Miller's 7±2 has been revised downward). FORGETTING is rapid (Ebbinghaus curve: ~50% lost within an hour without rehearsal). RECONSTRUCTION: memories aren't replayed but RECONSTRUCTED each time, incorporating errors, post-event information, and current beliefs. FALSE MEMORIES can be as vivid and confident as true ones. As a mental model: memory isn't a recording device—it's a RECONSTRUCTION engine that's lossy, mutable, and systematically biased.
When to use it
When important information needs protection from memory decay; when working memory limits constrain information processing; when the reconstructive nature of memory may be producing false confidence; when system design needs to compensate for rather than rely on human memory.
How it can help
Design systems that compensate for memory limitations rather than relying on memory. The practices: (1) EXTERNALIZE: write things down, use checklists, maintain decision journals—don't trust memory for important information. (2) CHUNK: organize information into 4-item groups to match working memory capacity. (3) SPACE REPETITION: review important information at increasing intervals to counter the forgetting curve. (4) DISTRUST vivid memories: vividness correlates with emotional intensity, not accuracy. (5) Verify memories against records when making important decisions. For organizations: any process that depends on individual memory for critical information is a fragile process.
