S-Curve
The characteristic shape of growth in most natural and business systems: slow initial growth (struggling for traction), rapid exponential growth (hitting product-market fit), then gradual deceleration and plateau (market saturation). Every technology, product, and organization follows some version of the S-curve. Knowing where you are on the curve determines whether to invest more, harvest, or prepare for the next curve.
When to use it
When evaluating growth trajectory. When growth is slowing and you need to diagnose why. When deciding whether to double down on current product or invest in next-generation. When a market seems either impossibly slow or unsustainably fast.
How it can help
The most important growth diagnostics framework. Prevents misinterpreting early-stage slowness as failure (you may be pre-inflection) and mid-stage deceleration as crisis (you may be approaching natural saturation). Guides resource allocation across the lifecycle.
