Explore Possible Solutions

The creative and analytical phase of generating MULTIPLE possible solutions to a well-defined problem before committing to one—deliberately expanding the solution space before contracting it. Effective solution exploration requires: (1) Separating generation from evaluation (brainstorm without judging). (2) Seeking DIVERSE solutions (different approaches, not variations on one approach). (3) Including 'extreme' or 'impossible' solutions that stretch thinking. (4) Looking for solutions from ANALOGOUS domains. As a mental model: the quality of the final solution is constrained by the BREADTH of solutions explored—narrow exploration produces locally optimal but globally mediocre solutions.

When to use it

When solution quality depends on exploration breadth; when the obvious solution may not be the best solution; when cross-domain analogies would reveal non-obvious approaches; when premature commitment to the first plausible solution needs prevention.
