Pain/Chemical-Induced Mental Confusion
Physical pain and chemical substances (alcohol, drugs, medication, sleep deprivation-induced neurochemical changes) directly impair cognitive function, producing poor judgment that the person experiencing it often cannot recognize. Bevelin and Munger emphasize this as a non-obvious source of systematic decision error: people making decisions while in pain, medicated, hungover, or sleep-deprived are operating with degraded cognitive hardware—yet they feel like they're thinking normally.
When to use it
When important decisions coincide with physical pain, illness, medication, or substance use; when someone's judgment seems unusually poor and physical factors haven't been considered; when designing decision processes that need to be robust against human impairment; when evaluating your own decision quality during periods of physical stress.
How it can help
Build structural protections against impaired decision-making: never make irreversible decisions when in pain, under the influence, or severely sleep-deprived. The insidious aspect is that impairment reduces your ability to recognize impairment—you feel clear-headed when you're not. The organizational implication: create cooling-off periods and escalation protocols that don't depend on the impaired person recognizing their own impairment.
