Back-of-the-Envelope Calculation

Rough quantitative estimation using simplified assumptions and round numbers to quickly assess whether an idea, market, or plan is in the right ballpark. Fermi estimation in practice: rather than researching exact numbers, decompose the question into estimable components and multiply. 'Is this market big enough?' becomes 'how many potential customers × average willingness to pay × purchase frequency?' Even with each estimate off by 2x, the result is usually within an order of magnitude—enough to make or kill most decisions.

When to use it

Before committing resources to any new initiative; when evaluating market size, unit economics, or project ROI; when someone presents a plan without quantitative grounding; when you need to quickly assess whether an idea is worth deeper analysis.

How it can help

Before investing significant time or money in any opportunity, do a 5-minute back-of-envelope calculation. Can this market support a $10M business? Is this unit economics viable? Will this project pay back within 2 years? The goal isn't precision—it's order-of-magnitude validation. If the rough math doesn't work with generous assumptions, the precise math won't either. This single habit prevents more wasted effort than any other analytical practice.
